In this study, you will make a series of choices between hypothetical prospects. A prospect specifies one or more possible monetary outcomes, each associated with a particular probability. It does not cost money to participate in the prospects. There are no right or wrong answers, we are simply interested in your preferences.
Prospects will be shown both as images and as text. Below is an example of how they will be presented. In Prospect A, you receive €100 with probability 0.50 and €0 with probability 0.50. In Prospect B, you receive €40 with probability 1.00.
To illustrate how these probabilities work, imagine a deck of 100 cards numbered 1–100. We then shuffle the cards and let you randomly draw one card from the deck. The number on the card determines the amount of money you receive.
For example, take prospect A and B shown below:
- In Prospect A, you gain €100 if the card number is 50 or lower, and €0 if the card number is 51 or higher. This corresponds to a 50% chance of €100 and a 50% chance of €0.
- In Prospect B, all 100 cards correspond to receiving €40. This means you always gain €40, regardless of which card you draw.
All payments are in euros, and there are no negative amounts.
